Starting April 2, 2025, all European Union (EU) nationals planning to visit the United Kingdom (UK) will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This new requirement aligns with the UK's ongoing efforts to enhance border security and streamline immigration processes.

What is an ETA?

An ETA is a digital authorization that permits visa-exempt travelers to enter the UK for short stays. It allows visits of up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business, short-term study, or medical treatment. The ETA is electronically linked to the traveler's passport and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. During its validity, holders can make multiple visits to the UK without reapplying.

Application Process

EU nationals can begin applying for the ETA starting March 5, 2025. The application process is straightforward and can be completed online via the official UK government website or through the UK ETA app, available on both Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Applicants will need:

  • Valid Passport: The passport you plan to travel with.
  • Digital Photograph: A recent digital photo of yourself.
  • Payment Method: A credit or debit card to pay the application fee.

The application involves providing personal and travel information, uploading the necessary documents, and answering a series of security-related questions. The process typically takes about 20 minutes to complete.

Cost and Processing Time

The ETA application fee is initially set at £10 (approximately €12). However, there are indications that this fee may increase to £16 (approximately €19) in the future. Applicants are advised to check the latest fee information before applying. Decisions on ETA applications are usually made within three working days, but it is recommended to apply well in advance of your planned travel date to accommodate any potential delays.

Exemptions

Certain individuals are exempt from the ETA requirement, including:

  • Holders of valid UK visas.
  • Individuals with permission to live, work, or study in the UK (including those with settled or pre-settled status).
  • British or Irish citizens.
  • Residents of Ireland traveling from within the Common Travel Area (Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man).

It's important to verify your specific circumstances to determine if an ETA is necessary for your travel.

Impact on Travelers

The introduction of the ETA system brings the UK's entry requirements in line with similar systems implemented by other countries, such as the United States' ESTA and Canada's eTA. While the process adds an extra step for travelers, it aims to enhance security and facilitate smoother entry procedures at UK borders. Travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new requirements and complete their ETA applications in a timely manner to ensure uninterrupted travel plans.
