Dutch airline industry calls for joint action agenda

Together towards cleaner, quieter and stronger

Airlines, knowledge institutions, the manufacturing industry, industry-wide associations and trade unions today jointly presented their vision of the future for the airline industry. With ten concrete commitments, we aim to collectively contribute to a future-proof airline industry for all people living in the Netherlands. Based on these commitments, the 31 parties hope to draft a joint action agenda together with the Dutch public, politicians, partners and industry-wide parties that will make the Dutch airline industry cleaner, quieter and stronger.

The airline industry connects people, economies and cultures and is crucial for carrying goods such as medicines, fresh food and electronics to the right destination on time. But flying also has an impact on the climate and our living environment. Consequently, it is important to establish a new balance with the living environment, where Dutch people can still afford to fly while keeping the Netherlands connected to the rest of the world.

A good balance

The Dutch airline industry needs prospects to achieve progress and stay abreast of international developments. By successfully implementing the action agenda together, we aim to achieve the following in the years ahead:

• A good balance with the living environment;
• Keeping the Netherlands well connected to the rest of the world;
• Keeping flying accessible to all Dutch people;
• Stronger global and European policy;
• Maintaining the Netherlands’ position as a leader in the production, logistics and purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF);
• Meeting our 2030 climate targets and making good progress towards achieving net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050;
• More international trains and excellent connectivity with Schiphol;
• More recycling and less residual waste in the airline industry;
• Quieter flights during the day and at night;
• Faster time to market for innovations such as electric and hydrogen-powered flight;
• An agreeable and safe workplace.

 Michel Peters, CEO of the Royal Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR): “If we want to continue flying in the future, the impact of the airline industry on the climate, environment and our surroundings must be reduced to zero over time. It’s therefore incredible that around 30 parties linked to the airline industry have endorsed the draft. The ten commitments form a solid foundation for us to achieve improvements together with the Dutch government in both the short and longer term for a future-proof airline industry.”

 Henri Werij, Dean of Aerospace Engineering at the Delft University of Technology: “Innovation is the key to more swiftly creating a quieter and more sustainable airline industry. The industry is facing huge challenges. How do we ensure that together we meet the 2050 target of net zero CO₂ emissions? The major breakthroughs needed for this will require huge efforts – also on the part of universities. Cooperation between all the partners across the chain is crucial, as is long-term commitment from government. Government policies geared to keeping talented individuals in the Netherlands and providing them with proper technical training for the jobs of the future. It’s fantastic that more than 30 parties are backing this initiative.”

Marjan Rintel, President & CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines: “Only by working together with government, knowledge institutes and industry can we take significant steps to achieve cleaner and quieter operations. The Netherlands has the expertise, infrastructure and entrepreneurs to lead the way. The ten concrete commitments adopted by the Dutch airline industry show what we stand for, what politicians can contribute to achieve these ambitions and what the Dutch people stand to gain. Together, let’s build a future-proof airline industry for everyone.”

Gunay Uslu, CEO of Corendon: “Preparing the airline and travel industry for the future presents important challenges and opportunities. We need to put our shoulders to grindstone together: companies, knowledge centres and trade unions alike. And we certainly need government’s help. This is essential if we are to achieve our industry’s sustainability target.”

Arjan Kers, General Manager of TUI Netherlands: “The Dutch have a big appetite for travel. It’s therefore important that the Netherlands remains well connected to the rest of the world, for holidaymakers and business travellers alike. For years, TUI has been investing in a young, modern fleet that is both quieter and more fuel-efficient, and we will continue to take steps towards achieving greater sustainability in the years ahead. The new cabinet now has an opportunity to restore balance and its relations with the travel industry. We hope to draft joint plans that have a positive impact on the living environment and business community. Let’s work together to create a healthy future for our amazing industry and keep holidays feasible and affordable for all Dutch people, now and in the future.”

Camiel Verhagen, President of the Dutch Airline Pilots Association (VNV) and pilot: “The airline industry must become cleaner and quieter, as well as remaining accessible and safe for all Dutch people. With our commitment, we will be contributing to this while also asking the politicians to advocate for a level European playing field in terms of social rules and the equivalent safety standards for non-European airlines with free access to our citizens. In this manner, Dutch people will still be assured of optimal flight safety and the people working in the airline industry will enjoy a healthy working environment.”

Marcel de Nooijer, CEO of Transavia: “We understand fully that flight operations must become cleaner, quieter and more efficient. It’s definitely best if we think and act industry-wide, so together with the business community, government and knowledge institutions. If everyone takes responsibility, we will together secure sustainable future-proof policy for our industry.”

Ingrid Thijssen, Chairperson of the Dutch employers’ association VNO-NCW: “The demand for air travel is high and isn’t set to go down any time soon. Schiphol and KLM’s network of frequent, direct connections to all the world’s economic centres is one of the few points where the Netherlands still stands out favourably in terms of its business climate. History has shown that once such a network collapses it cannot simply be reinstated. We should cherish this international connection, while at the same time more swiftly making flight operations cleaner and quieter. It’s good that there’s a plan for that.”

Marnix Fruitema, Chairperson of the Board of Airline Representatives in the Netherlands (BARIN): “This is our commitment as the airline industry to the Netherlands and its inhabitants. Only together can we make progress in more swiftly achieving cleaner and quieter flight operations. This is vital – it’s our ‘licence to operate’. All Dutch and foreign airlines wholeheartedly support this industry-wide initiative based on 10 concrete commitments.”

Nederlandse luchtvaart roept op tot gezamenlijke actieagenda

Samen naar schoner, stiller, sterker

Luchtvaartmaatschappijen, kennisinstellingen, maakindustrie, brancheorganisaties en vakbonden hebben vandaag gezamenlijk hun toekomstvisie op de luchtvaart gepresenteerd. Met tien concrete
commitments leveren wij een bijdrage aan een toekomstbestendige luchtvaart voor alle Nederlanders. Het doel van de eenendertig partijen is om samen met de Nederlander, de politiek, partners en sectorpartijen op basis van deze commitments een gezamenlijke actieagenda te verwezenlijken die de Nederlandse luchtvaart schoner, stiller en sterker maakt.

De luchtvaart verbindt mensen, economieën en culturen en is cruciaal om goederen zoals medicijnen, vers voedsel en elektronica op tijd op de juiste bestemming te krijgen. Maar vliegen heeft ook impact op het klimaat en de leefomgeving. Het is daarom belangrijk om een nieuwe balans te vinden met de leefomgeving, waarbij de Nederlander betaalbaar kan blijven vliegen en Nederland goed verbonden blijft met de rest van de wereld.

Goede balans

De Nederlandse luchtvaartsector heeft perspectief nodig om stappen vooruit te zetten en mee te kunnen bewegen met wereldwijde ontwikkelingen. Door samen de actieagenda succesvol uit te voeren, realiseren we de komende jaren:

• Een goede balans met de leefomgeving
• Dat Nederland uitstekend verbonden is met de rest van de wereld
• Dat vliegen toegankelijk blijft voor alle Nederlanders
• Steviger mondiaal en Europees beleid
• Dat Nederland koploper is in de productie, logistiek en afname van duurzame brandstoffen (SAF)
• Dat we onze klimaatdoelstellingen 2030 hebben gehaald en goed op weg zijn naar Net Zero CO2-uitstoot in 2050
• Meer internationale treinen en een uitstekende verbondenheid met Schiphol
• Meer recycling en minder restafval in de luchtvaartsector
• Stillere Nederlandse luchtvaart in de dag én de nacht
• Dat innovaties, zoals elektrisch vliegen en op waterstof sneller naar de markt gaan
• Een goede en veilige werkplek

Michel Peters, CEO van het Koninklijk Nederlands Lucht- en Ruimtevaartcentrum (NLR): “Als we in de toekomst willen blijven vliegen moet de impact van de luchtvaart op het klimaat, milieu en de omgeving omlaag en uiteindelijk naar nul. Het is dan ook oprecht bijzonder te noemen dat zo’n dertig partijen, betrokken in de luchtvaartsector, dit pamflet ondersteunen. De tien commitments vormen daarbij de basis om samen met de Nederlandse overheid zowel op de korte als op de langere termijn verbeteringen door te voeren ten behoeve van een toekomstbestendige luchtvaart.”

Henri Werij, Decaan Luchtvaart- en Ruimtevaarttechniek aan de TU Delft: “Innovatie is de sleutel om de luchtvaart sneller duurzamer en stiller te maken. De luchtvaart staat voor een enorme uitdaging. Hoe zorgen we samen dat we in 2050 het doel halen: Net Zero CO2-uitstoot. De grote doorbraken die hiervoor nodig zijn vragen om enorme inspanningen, ook vanuit de universiteiten. Samenwerking met
alle partners in de hele keten is cruciaal, evenals een langdurig gecommitteerde overheid. Overheidsbeleid dat helpt om talent in Nederland te houden en technisch goed op te leiden voor de banen van de toekomst. Erg mooi dat meer dan 30 partijen hier achter staan.”

Marjan Rintel, CEO KLM: “Alleen door samen te werken met de overheid, kennisinstellingen en het bedrijfsleven, kunnen we grote stappen zetten om schoner en stiller te vliegen. Nederland heeft de expertise, infrastructuur en ondernemers om hierin voorop te lopen. Met de tien concrete commitments van de Nederlandse luchtvaartsector laat de luchtvaart zien waar we voor staan, wat de politiek kan bijdragen om deze ambities te bereiken en wat de Nederlander eraan heeft. Laten we
samen bouwen aan een toekomstbestendige luchtvaart voor iedereen.”

Gunay Uslu, CEO Corendon: “Er liggen belangrijke uitdagingen en kansen om de luchtvaart- en reisbranche klaar voor de toekomst te maken. Daarvoor is het nodig dat we samen de schouders eronder zetten: bedrijven, kenniscentra, vakbonden. En we hebben daarbij zeker de hulp van de overheid nodig. Die is essentieel om de duurzame ambities van onze sector te kunnen behalen."

Arjan Kers, General Manager TUI Nederland: “De reislust onder Nederlanders is groot. Daarom is het belangrijk dat Nederland goed verbonden blijft met de rest van de wereld, voor zowel vakantiegangers als zakenreizigers. TUI investeert al jaren in een jonge en moderne vloot die stiller en zuiniger is en ook de komende jaren blijven wij stappen voorwaarts zetten op het gebied van verduurzaming. Een nieuw kabinet heeft nu de kans om de balans en de relatie met de reissector te herstellen. We willen gezamenlijk plannen maken die een positief effect hebben op leefomgeving en
ondernemerschap. Laten we samen werken aan een gezonde toekomst van onze mooie sector en vakantie haalbaar en betaalbaar houden voor alle Nederlanders, nu en in de toekomst.”

VNV-voorzitter en piloot Camiel Verhagen: “Luchtvaart moet niet alleen schoner en stiller worden, maar ook toegankelijk en veilig blijven voor alle Nederlanders. Met ons commitment dragen wij daaraan bij en vragen de politiek te pleiten voor een Europees gelijk speelveld op sociale regels en gelijkwaardige veiligheidsnormen voor niet-Europese luchtvaartmaatschappijen met vrije toegang tot onze burgers. Zo blijft de Nederlander verzekerd van de hoge vliegveiligheid en de mensen die in
de luchtvaart werken van een gezonde werkomgeving.”

 Marcel de Nooijer, CEO Transavia: “We snappen heel goed dat vliegen schoner, stiller en zuiniger moet. Het is ook goed als we daar sectorbreed over nadenken en naar handelen, dus met het bedrijfsleven, overheid en kennisinstellingen. Als iedereen zijn verantwoordelijkheid neemt dan zorgen we samen voor een bestendig toekomstbeleid voor de luchtvaart.”

 Ingrid Thijssen, voorzitter VNO-NCW: "Er is een grote behoefte aan vliegen en die gaat niet weg. Het netwerk van Schiphol en KLM met frequente rechtstreekse verbindingen met alle economische centra in de wereld is één van de weinige punten waarop Nederland zich qua ondernemingsklimaat nog in positieve zin onderscheidt. De geschiedenis bewijst; als zo’n netwerk eenmaal in elkaar zakt, komt het nooit meer terug. Die internationale verbondenheid moeten we koesteren, terwijl we tegelijk
vliegen sneller schoner en stiller moeten maken. Het is goed dat daar een plan voor ligt."

Marnix Fruitema, voorzitter van de BARIN: “Dit is ons commitment als luchtvaartsector aan Nederland en aan Nederlanders. Alleen samen kunnen we stappen maken om sneller schoner en stiller te vliegen. Dit moet, het is onze “license to operate”. Alle Nederlandse en buitenlandse luchtvaartmaatschappijen steunen deze sectorvisie met 10 concrete punten van harte.
